Detour Lake and Roncanville capture mine safety awards

Placer Dome was among several companies to receive a John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy at the annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum, held in Edmonton, Alta.

The company’s Detour Lake mine won in the metal mining category. Drilling was recently carried out on certain western extensions of the gold deposit, situated 125 miles northeast of Timmins, Ont.

The Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan’s Roncanville division was one of two winners in the select mine category; the other being Little Narrows Gypsum Company for its Nova Scotia operation.

There was also a double winner in the coal competition, with awards going to Fording Coal’s Genesee operation in Alberta and N.B. Coal’s mine in New Brunswick.

Safety records have improved 73% for operations that have entered the John Ryan National Safety awards in the past 10 years. The lost time injury rate of those who entered in 1995 was 1.8 per 200,000 hours, compared with 6.6 in 1985.
