When one of Canada’s best known mining consulting groups was wound down in 1991, two surviving companies carried on the business. One of the partners, Ian Thompson, moved out to Vancouver and established Derry, Michener, Booth & Wahl Consultants Ltd. while another of the partners, David Wahl, continued on with Derry, Michener, Booth & Wahl Inc. (DMBW Inc.) in Toronto.
Now DMBW Inc. has merged with Dames and Moore, Canada, a company 80% owned by Dames and Moore of Los Angeles and 20% by employees.
Wahl says the combination of the two firms will provide the mining industry with all the services a mining company will need. “There’s a lot of synergy between the two companies,” he says. “The more we explore it, the more we see the benefits.”
With environmental issues becoming increasingly important to mining projects and having a growing impact on costs, Wahl says the merger will provide “one-stop shopping” for mining companies. Wahl’s firm specializes in areas ranging from property evaluations to financing, environmental audits and project management while Dames & Moore, Canada, specializes in environmental engineering, hydrogeology and waste management.
