Doe Run’s smelting division set a safety record in 1989, with an on-the-job safety performance of 1.1 lost-time injuries per 200,000 man-hours worked, according to John FitzSimmons, general manager. The smelting division’s safety performance outpaces the national safety average for lead smelters in the U.S., which in 1988 was 7.9 lost-time injuries per 200,000 man- hours worked, according to the national bureau of labor statistics.
The smelter’s average reading for 1989 was 1.1 micrograms of lead per cubic metre of air.
Doe Run’s smelting division includes smelters at Herculaneum and Buick, Miss.
