Drills turn at Murray Brook

Darmouth, N.S.-based NovaGold Resources (NRI-T) will shortly begin a second phase of drilling on its Murray Brook massive sulphide deposit, 60 km west of Bathurst, N.B.

The program, which will consist of 3 to 5 holes totalling 1,800 metres, will target the down-plunge extension of a lead-zinc zone intersected in hole 98-5A during the first phase of drilling. The mineralized zone measured 20.4 metres (starting at 144.2 metres) grading 8.15% combined lead-zinc, 73.66 grams silver per tonne and 0.33 gram gold, and included a higher-grade core. A wider zone intersected further downhole returned 5.15% combined lead-zinc with 51.72 grams silver and 0.54 gram gold over 68.6 metres (from 169.2 to 237.8 metres) (T.N.M., Mar. 16-22).

NovaGold is currently carrying out an electromagnetic survey in order to determine the strike and dip of the massive sulphide mineralization at depth, with drilling scheduled to follow.

Murray Brook was developed as an open-pit copper mine in 1992. The operation, however, was suspended later that year due to severe winter weather, and the subsequent decline in copper prices prevented the project from restarting. At last report, the deposit contained reserves amenable to open-pit mining totalling 600,000 tonnes at 2.5% copper. Mineralization occurs in the form of mixed primary and secondary sulphide minerals.
