The following is extracted from a letter from Professor C. Jay Hodgson, professor of mineral deposits geology, Queen’s University, Kingston, to Premier David Peterson, acting minister, Ontario ministry of northern development and mines, concerning the proposed move of the Ontario Geological Survey from Toronto to Sudbury.
The Ontario Geological Survey and its predecessor, the Ontario department of mines, have played a central role in the development of a vibrant and economically important resource industry in Ontario.
To a large extent, the success of this industry has been due to the synergetic interaction of Survey, industry and university personnel. By moving the Ontario Geological Survey to Sudbury, you will strain personal links, and preclude the development of similar personal links in the future.
Considering the track record of similar moves toward decentralization in the world as a whole, there seems little chance that this move will have any positive effects. In my opinion, it will be the beginning of an inevita ble deterioration of one of the most highly regarded, on a world scale, of the Ontario government’s institutions. The federal government recently planned to move the Geological Survey of Canada to Thunder Bay, but reconsidered and cancelled the move at the last minute.
I strongly urge you also to reconsider your decision on this matter.
