When you’re the best at what you do, the world comes knocking. Such is the case with Exploration ’87 which is being held in Toronto this week. Also known as the Third Decennial International Conference on Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration for Minerals and Groundwater, the conference will provide a forum where the latest technological developments and achievements in mineral exploration can be presented to exploration geologists and geophysicists from around the world.
As a leader in mineral exploration technology, Canada’s mining community plays a natural host. Much of the technology being used today was developed here and has been successfully exported around the globe. One doesn’t blink an eye then when we learn that the general chairman of the conference is Dr Harold O. Seigel, president and founder of Scintrex Ltd., a renowned developer and exporter of Canadian geophysical technology.
More importantly, however, the conference enables the industry as a whole to focus on exploration — which forms the very essence of mining. From rudimentary reconnaissance field excursions to sophisticated airborne geophysical surveys, mineral exploration provides the foundation for the entire industry. Unfortunately, it is also a sector which is the first to be ignored during good times, and the first to witness budget cuts during the bad.
Today, exploration activities appear to be enjoying boom times, not only in Canada, but throughout the world. The lion’s share of those activities are going towards the search for gold. In such an environment then, Exploration ’87 is assured of success.
