EDITORIAL & OPINION — NEW HORIZONS — Responsibility at heart of INAP

The International Network for Acid Prevention is a recently established organization founded by 17 of the world’s leading mining companies. Its purpose is to promote significant improvements in the management of sulphidic mine materials and the reduction of liability through knowledge-sharing and research and development.

Acid prevention is a major environmental challenge for the mining industry around the world. In the past, progress in advancing the science and practices related to acid prevention has been achieved through initiatives such as the Canadian Mine Environment Neutral Drainage program. Individual companies have also contributed to these efforts.

To build on past successes, it was recognized that an international effort was needed. The establishment of INAP is an important step forward in that it links experts around the world and enables them to share their knowledge and participate in joint research projects. These projects cover the full range of technical challenges and climatic conditions.

The main activities of the INAP include:

  • allowing members to share their knowledge with each other;
  • advancing our understanding of specific technical issues; and
  • developing joint research projects.

INAP is working to improve communication between its members and research and consulting firms. Communication with national research programs and governments is also a priority.

INAP has received considerable international support, and it is expected that its significant contribution to acid prevention will benefit the mining industry globally.

Members of INAP include Asarco, Barrick Gold, BHP, Billiton, Falconbridge, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inco, Pe~noles, Noranda, Pasminco, Placer Dome, Rio Algom, Rio Tinto, Cyprus, Homestake, Normandy and Teck.

Its primary objective is to help the mining industry meet its environmental standards.

The preceding appeared in the latest newsletter of the International Council on Metals and the Environment.
