There has been a lot of tough talk emanating out of Ottawa lately (Messrs Mulroney and Clark) directed at South Africa, threatening the imposition of sanctions against that country designed to cripple its economy and thus bring that white government to its knees unless it abandons its racial policy of apartheid.
Well, now the gory details are out. Included, of all things, is to be a prohibition on the import of uranium. Sure, South Africa is an exporter of uranium. But aren’t we ourselves the world’s leading uranium producer with the world’s richest uranium mines? Why in heaven’s name would we ever want to import uranium from South Africa or from any other nation for that matter? Also, our list of no-nos includes coal, iron and steel, and agricultural products, all of which this country produces in abundance and for which we are forever seeking out export markets.
Frankly, we have never seen any real evidence that sanctions, per se, work. Indeed, they have even been known to backfire. Canada’s latest move, we would have to think, will hardly make waves in that country, if it indeed even becomes aware of it.
