Electric car uses cobalt battery

Electric Auto Corp. (EAC), based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., plans to produce a zero-emissions sport utility vehicle (SUV) for the California market.

The Silver Volt SUV, equipped with EAC’s Apollo fuel cell and a lead cobalt battery, will retail for the same price as similar gasoline-powered SUVs on the market. Production is expected to start at 35 vehicles per month and eventually reach 2,000.

The Silver Volt will have a top speed of 90 miles per hour and be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 m.p.h. in about 10 seconds. Refuelling is expected to take roughly five minutes using an ammonia-based fuel or methanol, and, when full, the car will be able to travel 350-400 miles on one tank.

The fuel cell continually charges the battery, much like an alternator does in a gas-powered car.

Battery production is to begin later this year, with fuel cell manufacturing beginning in 2002.
