Arsenic has been the bugbear at El Indio since its inception. Currently, 93% of the arsenic is captured before it goes out the roaster stacks. LAC is working to increase the gas capture to 98%. According to Nibaldo Cordova, vice-president, operations, that level of emissions should be met by 1993. Roaster emissions do meet current standards for both arsenic and antimony.
All mill water is recycled to prevent seepage into the groundwater and the company incorporates a dry tailings system to minimize the environmental impact and reduce total tailings volume.
