Canadian precious metals miner Fortuna Mining (TSX: FVI; NYSE: FSM) reported Tuesday the death of a contracted employee at its Séguéla gold mine in Côte d’Ivoire, following an incident involving an exploding fire extinguisher.
The accident occurred Monday while an employee of Mapa Protection Incendie, a service provider for mine contractor Mota Engil, was refilling fire extinguishers. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities have been notified, and an investigation is underway, the company said. The safety and well-being of the entire workforce are Fortuna’s top priority, CEO Jorge A. Ganoza said.
“We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to understand how this happened, and to prevent such incidents in the future,” he said.
The Séguéla mine, which poured its first gold in May 2023, is one of Fortuna’s key assets in West Africa.
Shares in Fortuna Mining fell nearly 1% on Tuesday morning to $6.29 apiece in Toronto for a market capitalization of $1.93 billion.
