EXPLORING FOR DIAMONDS AND THE NORTH — Haileybury school

About 70 participants, mainly geologists, prospectors and university students, recently attended a 1-day workshop on kimberlite exploration, at the Haileybury School of Mines in Haileybury, Ont.

Titled “Geophysical methods in the exploration of kimberlites,” the 10th annual workshop was sponsored by the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society and partly funded by Natural Resources Canada (formerly Energy, Mines and Resources Canada).

Instructors John Buckle, Laurie Reed and Chris Pegg focused on the basics of geophysical techniques and the criteria needed to detect kimberlite pipes, along with applied case histories for diamond exploration in Canada and elsewhere.

The workshop was organized by Prof. V.R. Kundari of the Haileybury school. The manual distributed at the workshop contained several case histories of diamond exploration in different parts of Canada.
