Fairstar plans drilling program in Ghana

Diamond drilling is scheduled to begin on Fairstar Explorations’ (FFR-M) 150-sq.-km Benso concession in Ghana, West Africa.

The company will focus on three prospects — Amantin, Subriso and Chichiwelli — that are underlain by sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Lower and Upper Birimian series. The US$2.8-million program is expected to be completed next June.

* Amantin prospect — Although an initial 10-hole diamond drill program failed to turn up any results, a geochemical and geophysical program outlined a 1-km-long, gold-in-saprolite anomaly. Oriented north-south, the anomaly is believed to be the source of gold that has been feeding local artisanal miners for the past few generations. A 2,000-metre drill program is set to begin.

* Subriso prospect — Previous geochemical soil sampling and a ground magnetometer survey outlined a major, north-south-trending structure underlying the prospect. Also outlined were prominent cross-structures closely associated with a 2-km-long, gold-in-soil geochemical anomaly.

Fairstar will correlate new samples with trench samples revealing 0.1 oz.

gold per ton over 30 ft. and 0.38 oz. gold over 60 ft.

The company plans to conduct an induced-polarization (IP) survey over favorable areas of the structure, with a 4,000-metre diamond drill program scheduled to follow in early January 1997.

* Chichiwelli — The company is awaiting results from a soil geochemical and ground magnetometer program. Geophysical work has outlined a major, east-west structure extending for 2 km across a regional, northeasterly-trending shear zone in the Upper Birimian sequences.

Previous drilling by BHP Minerals revealed two gold-bearing zones along its eastern segment. One drill intersected 5 metres of 13.5 grams gold, and another intersected 3.6 metres of 6.1 grams gold.

Fairstar will conduct an IP survey over favorable areas of the main, east-west structure before launching a 4,200-metre drill program in spring 1997.

The Benso concession lies on the southeastern side of the Ashanti gold belt.
