Falconbridge plans May production at Lindsley project

Commencement of production at the Thayer Lindsley project north of Sudbury, Ont., is planned for May by Falconbridge.

Ore at the Blezard Twp. project consists mainly of copper and precious metals. The company plans to gain access to the mineralization from the 1,310-metre level.

Falconbridge, one of two major nickel producers in the Sudbury area, projects a 4-year life for the mine with current reserves. The production rate will be 500 tonnes per day with the ore to be milled at the Strathcona concentrator in the Onaping area. About 60 people will work on site.

The mine will have no tailings area and the permanent water discharge from the mine will be treated at an existing area plant.

The Lindsley project was first drilled in 1986, with underground work initiated in 1988. The next year saw a beginning to work on the shaft, which was dug to a depth of 1,640 metres.

Falconbridge is owned jointly by Noranda (TSE) and Trelleborg AB of Sweden.
