Fatality reported at Copper Rand

A miner was killed and another injured in an underground explosion involving methane gas at the Copper Rand mine of copper-gold producer MSV Resources (ME) at Chibougamau, Que.

Rene Gauthier, 46, died instantly in the explosion, which was apparently triggered by the lighting of a cigarette. Injured was his partner, Daniel Girard, 33.

MSV has been mining in the Chibougamau area for the past two years and has experienced no similar incidents.
