Quest Rare Minerals (TSX: QRM) has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Montreal-based Fednav to develop and deliver shipping solutions for the Strange Lake REE project in northeastern Quebec.
According to the agreement Fednav will provide marine transportation and engineering services as required to deliver REE ore concentrates from Strange Lake to Quest’s proposed processing plant in Bécancour, near Trois-Rivières, Que.
Fednav’s work will include developing ship specifications, berth design, ship-loading equipment and port operational procedures. The contractor will also liaise with regulators and affected aboriginal communities.
“[Fednav’s] expertise in Canadian and international shipping, particularly in the north Labrador Sea, will strengthen our development plans and assist our project team in building a truly world-class mining operation,” Quest president and CEO Peter Cashin said.
Fednav is an international dry bulk-shipping company which boasts having participated in every major bulk-shipping project in the Canadian Arctic.
“The development of Strange Lake as a major provider of rare earths is a unique opportunity, with the potential for worldwide economic impact,” Fednav’s president and co-CEO Paul Pathy said. “It is good for Quebec and good for Canada, and we are pleased to devote Fednav’s shipping experience to contribute to its success.”
Fednav has 75 ships in operation across the globe and recently sent the first unescorted commercial ship through the Northwest Passage, carrying nickel concentrate.
