Feds fund scholarships

The federal government has given $24,000 in scholarships to geomatics students under the Geomatics Canada Scholarship Program.

Under the plan, 16 college and university students received scholarships worth $1,250 to $1,750.

Geomatics is a scientific and technical field that uses various methods to gather and manage geographic information. It includes disciplines such as surveying, mapping, remote-sensing and global positioning systems.

The scholarships help students working toward their degrees or diplomas in a geomatics-related field. The program is administered by the Ottawa-based Canadian Institute of Geomatics. Scholarship winners also receive 1-year student memberships in the institute.

“This field ensures that our natural resources are used wisely and contribute to the quality of life of all Canadians,” says Herb Dhaliwal, minister of Natural Resources Canada.

Geomatics is expected to generate more than 16,000 jobs over the next five years. Canadian geomatics companies generate close to $2 billion in products and services annually, 30% of which are exported.
