Fernando Bearzi, known as the logistical expert in Argentina, has died of complications following surgery there.
In the 1990s, Bearzi provided logistical support for miners working in the country via his Salta-based company, Marina Servicios. The company serviced the country’s mining boom throughout that decade and indeed was one of the few Argentine suppliers with a functioning network.
Although he lacked a background in mining, Bearzi quickly adapted to meet the needs of geologists who flocked to South America in search of deposits. He built exploration camps, provided transportation and communications, and devised ways to move equipment and supplies to the most remote parts of Argentina.
Known for his tireless spirit, Bearzi continued working as a mining supplier long after the exploration recession had taken root. He provided logistical support to National Geographic magazine and the U.S. military while awaiting the country’s next staking rush.
Until his death, he was conducting business from his hospital bed.
Fernando is survived by his wife Lucrecia and daughters Maria, Lara and Paula.
