Fewer garimpeiros active in Brazil

Two studies by Brazil’s national mining department indicate a sharp decline in garimpeiros activity.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines reports that the number of garimpeiros in Brazil has fallen to 400,000 from about one million in 1990. The most popular mineral sought is gold, followed by gemstones, diamonds and cassiterite. The Amazon and central-western Brazil are areas of activity.

The studies recommend legalizing the garimpeiros activity as a means of helping to protect the environment.
