Earth Science Consultancy Organization of the U.K. is marketing an electrochemical probe called the Goldspear, manufactured by Goldspear UK.

Used primarily for detecting sulphides and magnetites in alluvial and elluvial sands, gravels and soils, the unit weighs about 2 kg and comes equipped with a 1.2-m long stainless steel probe with a tungsten carbide sensor head.

The sensor head measures the electrochemical potential and conductivity of the wet soil particles it comes in contact with. Signals are transmitted to the operator via indicator lights and auditory signals via headphones. A green light indicates the presence of any heavy metal, a red light indicates pyrite, an orange light calcopyrite and a yellow light gold and platinum. Circle reply card No. b
