Fluor, Davy McKee awarded contract by Kennecott

A contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction management for the Utah copper smelter modernization project of Kennecott was awarded to Fluor Daniel Inc. and Davy McKee Corp.

The contract, worth about US$600 million, includes detailed design and construction management of a 1.1-million-ton-per-year copper concentrate smelting facility.

The facility will be built just east of the existing smelter; construction will start up in 1993, with the completion date set for 1995. Kennecott currently exports 40% of its copper concentrates, and the new smelter will allow the company to process all of its concentrates at the Utah facility.
