The action was taken in early May after water leaking from a cooling system on the roof of the furnace building contacted molten copper, causing damage. The furnace was shut down, and a maintenance program, planned for July, has been advanced to the present.
The shutdown will affect the production of 12,000-13,000 tonnes copper, preventing Falconbridge from fulfilling its contractual obligations in the near term.
In 2003, Kidd Creek produced 133,000 tonnes of copper.
The smelter processes copper-zinc ore from the Kidd Creek mine and copper concentrate from Falconbridge’s Sudbury mines, as well as ore from third parties.
