Freewest finds gold zone in NB

Vancouver — Backhoe trenching has uncovered a new gold zone at Freewest Resources Canada‘s (FWR-V) Clarence Stream property in New Brunswick.

Dubbed “Murphy,” the new zone was intermittently exposed by trenching over a strike length of 200 metres and widths of 10-50 metres. It remains open along strike in both directions. Gold mineralization is associated with intense quartz vein stockwork and sheeted quartz veins hosted in sericitized and silicified metasedimentary rocks. The quartz veins and wall rocks contain moderate to heavy amounts of stibnite, arsenopyrite and pyrite with lesser amounts of sphalerite and chalcopyrite.

Channel samples returned 4.81 grams gold per tonne over 5 metres from trench 1 and 3.78 grams gold over 8.5 metres from trench 2. At its widest point, the Murphy zone is exposed over a width of 50 metres. Wet ground conditions prevented Freewest from channel sampling in the area of trench 3; grab samples were taken, however, and these returned 1.61-9.79 grams gold.

At trench 4, the company took four grab samples, which returned 2.5-7.84 grams gold.

Recent prospecting in the area of Anomaly A, which measures 4 by 1 km, yielded additional high-grade mineralized float. Grab samples assayed as high as 72.38 and 176.54 grams gold per tonne at the AD and MW zones, respectively. Trenching is under way at these showings in an effort to trace the float to its bedrock source.

In addition, overburden drilling and trenching are being performed on Anomaly B, about 2 km southwest of Anomaly A. A prime drill target, Anomaly B measures 500 by 200 metres and contains maximum values of up to 1.5 grams gold, 67.8 parts per million antimony and 182 ppm arsenic. Drilling is planned for early February 2002.
