Freightrain mini-bulk samples deliver larger stones

Twin Mining (TWG-T) has recovered 869 diamonds weighing a total of 46.208 carats from six mini-bulk pit samples on the Freightrain kimberlite at the company’s Jackson Inlet property on Baffin Island in Nunavut.

Of that total, 30 stones range between 0.25 and 1.557 carats. In all, 228.2 tonnes of crater facies kimberlite material were collected from the six pits.

The largest stone recovered, a gem quality diamond, measures 7.1 by 6.27 by 3.94 mm, the largest from the property so far. The stone was recovered from a 76.3-tonne sample from pit JI-1, near the centre of the pipe. In all, the sample from pit JI-1 returned 257 diamonds weighing in at 17.309 carats.

Next in line is a 0.936-carat stone measuring 7.07 by 4.99 by 3.30 mm. The stone came from a 23.72-tonne sample from pit JI-5.

Other highlights include:

  • a 0.870-carat stone measuring 6.56 by 4.85 by 3.08 mm;
  • a 0.867-carat stone measuring 6.21 by 4.22 by 3.46 mm; and
  • a 0.809-carat stone measuring 4.56 by 4.56 by 3.93 mm.

Overall, 354 diamonds totalling 44.27 carats were recovered from a 0.85-to-1.18-mm square mesh sieve size; 325 stones were recovered from a 1.18-to-1.70-mm square mesh screen; 131 stones were recovered from a 1.70-to-2.36-mm square mesh screen; 49 stones were recovered from a 2.36-to-3.35-mm square mesh screen; 8 stones were recovered from a 3.35-to-4.75-mm square mesh screen; and 2 stones exceeded a 4.75-mm sieve size.

The diamonds range from high quality white and transparent stones to transparent stones yellow, pink and amber in colour.

The implied overall grade of the mini-bulk samples is 0.202 carat per tonne.

Last spring, a parcel of 86 stones, exceeding 1 mm and weighing 3.64 carats, was recovered from an 18.4-tonne mini-bulk surface collected from Freightrain. The sample has an implied grade of 0.198 carat per tonne. The largest stone weighed 1 carat and measured 6.98 by 5.64 by 3.6 mm.

Results of a diamond distribution study being performed by AMEC E&C Services are expected shortly. The study is also aimed at determining a suitable target and the size of a larger bulk sample.

Freightrain outcrops as a series of 16 weathered kimberlite fragment showings interspersed with predominant limestone fragments on frost boil surfaces within a 500-metre diameter area.

After shooting up to 58 in early traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday, Twin’s shares settled to 51 early in the afternoon, up 2 or about 4% from their previous close.
