The global mining scene as viewed by an international contractor will form the basis of an address at the Feb. 16 luncheon of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
Gary Gantner, vice-president of operations for Fluor Daniel, will speak on “International minerals projects: a contractor’s perspective.” Based in Denver and responsible for the engineering, construction and performance of mineral projects throughout the world, Gantner travels extensively to Fluor’s many project sites and regional offices. His presentation will provide an overview of specific international projects and their “challenges.” The results and trends will be discussed in the context of learning from past experiences.
International mining carries with it various financial and political risks. For example, relationships must be developed among bankers, owners and contractors. Also, contractors must be prepared to expand their portfolio of services.
A graduate in mining engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, Gantner served as a U.S. army captain in Germany and Vietnam. He joined Fluor Daniel (mining and metals) in December, 1994. He was previously president and director of Bateman (Americas).
