Gary Howell, executive director for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) since February 1994, has died. He was 54.
Howell was a geologist with more than 27 years experience in mining. He held bachelor and master degrees from Baylor University.
As executive director, Howell succeeded in making the SME more accessible to members, the mining community, and the public, in part by bringing the organization on-line.
Before joining the SME, Howell spent most of the 1970s with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). He served as assistant editor, managing editor, publications manager, and finally as the association’s science director and international development advisor.
In 1980, Howell became a director of ERICO, a London-based geologic consulting firm, where he worked on projects in Texas, Oklahoma, North Africa and the North Sea. In 1982, he became resident exploration geologist for ENSERCH International in Abu Dhabi, a member state of the United Arab Emirates; in 1984, he returned to ENSERCH’s headquarters in Dallas as senior international exploration geologist in charge of the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Howell joined the World Bank’s second gas development project in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1987, where he supervised the exploration and drilling operation.
In 1989, Howell returned to the AAPG as science director and international development organizer, where he served until joining the SME six years ago
He is survived by his wife, Pamela, and two sons, Bradley and Stephen.
