Gas pipeline explosion affects Soviet smelter

Cold weather is being blamed for the rupture of the pipeline, which provides the only energy feed to the huge Siberian facility.

Repairs to the pipeline may have caused a production loss of 10 million lb, analysts say. Information about the size of the facility’s nickel inventory makes it difficult to speculate on the effect, if any, of the accident on the market, analysts say.
