Geologist awarded major Fellowship

Geologist Dr Robert Kerrich, recently appointed to the George McLeod chair in geology at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, has been awarded the E. W. R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada, (NSERC).

It is the Council’s most prestigious recognition of scientific achievement, and is widely regarded as the hi ghest honor Canada can bestow on an academic scientist or engineer under age 40.

The Fellowship will allow Dr Kerrich to become a research professor for two years, with salary and research costs borne by NSERC. Dr Kerrich has been acclaimed internationally for his research in the mechanics of rock deformation, fluid-rock interactions, and the concentration of precious metals, particularly gold.

Born in England, Dr Kerrich took a B.Sc. in geology in 1971 at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, later obtaining M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at the same College.
