A group of geoscientists is drafting a plan which would allow geoscientists in Ontario to register as professionals. The committee, chaired by consulting geologist Bill Pearson, was formed as a result of a poll taken last fall which revealed 86% of geoscientists in Ontario would welcome a professional designation. According to Pearson, when it comes to professional recognition for geologists, Ontario is behind some of the other provinces. Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and most recently Newfoundland have established associations. Registration in British Columbia is imminent. As a result, geologists from Ontario who want to work within these provincial jurisdictions often experience difficulties.
“We are making progress, said Pearson, but the process could take two or three years,” said Pearson.
Registration, if and when allowed, will most likely be through the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.
