Giant mine trial under way

In Yellowknife, N.W.T., the trial has begun into the deaths of nine men at the Giant gold mine in September, 1992, following a bomb blast.

Charged with nine counts of first-degree murder is Roger Warren, 50. He has pleaded not guilty.

The blast occurred a few months into a violent labor dispute at the mine, owned by Royal Oak Mines. After the union rejected a tentative agreement containing contract concessions, the company locked out 240 workers. The company continued to operate using replacement workers, including some miners who crossed their union’s picket line.

The Crown is expected to take about a month to present its evidence.
