Gold ’86 shaping up as a major international event

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend Gold ’86; an international symposium on the geology of gold deposits taking place in Toronto from Sept 28- Oct 1.

Symposium Chairman Eric Craigie says more than 600 pre- registrations have been received — many coming from overseas countries. Lectures, which will take place in the new Metro Convention Centre, will be headed under different catagories. These include Canadian Precambrian deposits, new Canadian gold depsoits, gold in Precambrian Shields, the Hemlo camp and epithermal gold deposits. Some of the foreign deposits which will be examined include the Crixas in Brazil and the Porgera deposit, one of the world’s largest undeveloped reserves, in Papua New Guinea.

The organizers, who have been involved with the project for almost two years, couldn’t have scheduled a better time for the symposium. With gold trading over $400(US) per oz, a two year high, a great deal of interest remains focused on gold exploration not only in Canada, but in many other countries as well.

A highlight of the symposium is the publication of the proceedings volume which will include the texts of all the lectures presented. This publication will be available to delegates at the convention and is included in the registration fee.

The four-day event will also include more than 40 displays by geophysical manufacturers, consultants and other exploration service industries and more than 50 poster displays outlining various gold- related research projects. A core shack will also be featured each day, displaying descriptive core sections from 60 different Canadian and U.S. gold deposits.

A variety of geological field trips have also been organized which will examine the nature of gold mineralization at Red Lake, Hemlo and the Abitibi area of northern Ontario and Quebec.

Mr Craigie notes that although pre-registration has closed, registration can still be obtained at the convention site during each day of the symposium.
