Peru’s principal organization for the mining industry, the Sociedad Nacional de Mineria, Petroleo y Energia (SNMPE), will hold the fifth International Gold Symposium in Lima from May 14 to 17.
The symposium, to be held in co-operation with the World Gold Council, will provide a forum for discussion of economic, technical and regulatory issues in gold exploration, production and marketing.
Among those already planning to attend the symposium are chief executives Wayne Murdy of Newmont Mining, Bobby Godsell of AngloGold, Randall Oliphant of Barrick Gold, and Alberto Benavides of Compania Minas Buenaventura, who will all take part in a producers’ round-table discussion on May 14.
The symposium will also include a session on Latin American mining policies, with presentations by mines ministers and senior civil servants from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela. Among the presenters will be mines ministers Jorge Vasconcelos of Brazil and Pablo Teran of Ecuador.
Other sessions will deal with sustainable development, social responsibilities of mining companies, the geology of disseminated and vein-type gold mineralization in Latin America, gold metallurgy, and mine safety. A trade exhibit runs in tandem with the symposium.
Past symposiums have proved to be popular with the international mining industry; the fourth symposium, held last year, attracted 873 delegates from 24 countries.
