Golden Star adds to portfolio in Guyana

Edmonton-based Golden Star Resources has increased its exposure to gold exploration in Guyana by signing mineral agreements for three permissions with the Guyanese government.

According to Golden Star, the three new properties, Tiger Creek, Eagle Mountain and Winter mine, will bring the company’s Guyana exploration projects to seven.

The Tiger Creek and Eagle Mountain permissions are contiguous and located in the central Guyana’s Potaro region 230 km southwest of Georgetown. Golden Star says the permissions were selected to encompass a cluster of gold, molybdenum and tungsten bearing granitiod intrusives and numerous vein-associated gold workings. “The area represents the headwaters of several of the most productive alluvial gold bearing creeks in Guyana,” Golden Star says. After completing a limited diamond drill program over a granitic intrusive in the Eagle Mountain area, Anaconda (B.G.) Ltd. found that it is significantly gold bearing, said Golden Star vice-president Richard Fraser.

The Winter Mine property is 20 km east of Omai on the Mabura Hill Road. According to Fraser, the area comprises a deep laterite profile and it includes previous gold workings associated with several quartz vein occurrences.

Golden Star says initial work on the properties will consist of reconnaissance geological mapping, geochemical soil and ground geophysical surveys over the entire area to define targets for detailed evaluation.
