At the next meeting of the Toronto Geological Discussion group, Ray Goldie of Salman Partners will examine how the political mess between Inco and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador almost killed the Voisey’s Bay nickel project. The meeting is slated for Feb. 21 at the Ontario Club in Toronto.
Goldie was a member of a prospecting party, led by geologist David Barr, which travelled to the coast of northern Labrador in 1970 in search of metal deposits. But it was not until 1994 that two prospectors from Newfoundland discovered the nickel-rich Voisey’s Bay deposit. Inco eventually gained control of Voisey’s Bay but the company’s struggles to bring it into production are legend.
