Gov’t hints at GSB cuts

The government of British Columbia is considering cutting or reassigning a large part of the staff of the province’s Geological Survey Branch.

Energy and Mines Minister Richard Neufeld said in a televised “open” cabinet meeting that the Ministry “used to have a very big part” devoted to geoscience work and that “we want to get a little bit away from that.”

Responding to a question from provincial treasurer Gary Collins, Neufeld said he wanted the Ministry to “be able to move those people around to wherever there is more activity,” principally in those parts of the province with hydrocarbon potential.
