Grants benefit Kirkland Lake area

The northern Ontario community of Kirkland Lake has been the most popular area in the province this year for OPAP and OMIP grants, the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines reports.

Grants for 80 projects under OPAP (Ontario Prospector Assistance Program) and for 35 projects (worth more than $3 million) under OMIP (Ontario Mineral Incentives Program) have been approved for the Kirkland Lake area. Timmins is the second most popular area.

As of Oct. 22, ministry officials had approved 420 OPAP grants worth $4 million and 154 OMIP grants totalling $9.2 million.

OPAP provides up to $10,000 per year to individuals searching for grassroots exploration targets by reimbursing 50% of eligible expenses for projects in northern Ontario.
