Greek gov’t suspends work at TVX’s Stratoni

Mining has been suspended again in parts of TVX Gold‘s (TVX-T) Stratoni silver-lead-zinc operation, 65 km east of the Greek port of Thessaloniki.

The Greek Ministry of Development told the company the suspension is required so that the government can decide if a new environmental impact study (EIS) is required. The study is related to a proposed expansion.

In the meantime, TVX has declared force majeure with respect to mining until the EIS is approved. The Stratoni mill, which is treated as a separate business, will not be affected immediately.

“It’s disappointing that matters could not have been resolved in a timely manner and without impairing operational efficiencies,” says TVX President Sean Harvey.

Late in 2002, the Greek Conseil d’Etat agreed that no new EIS was required for an expansion of the Mavres Petres mine to proceed (the mine is part of the Stratoni operation). However, the court’s decision must be confirmed by all relevant ministries.

Stratoni produced 25,400 tonnes of zinc, 21,700 tonnes of lead and 1.77 million oz. silver in the first nine months of 2002.
