Increased gold production, a higher gold price and a weaker Canadian dollar all enabled Hemlo Gold Mines (TSE) to increase earnings to $38.1 million (or 39 cents a share) for the first half of 1994 from $21.9 million (or 23 cents a share) in the same period last year.
Production for the period was 273,500 oz., which is 20% higher than output in the first half of last year. The company’s realized average price of gold also increased, to US$381 per oz., which is 6% higher than it was in the previous first half.
Hemlo expects to augment production when the Holloway project comes on stream. Custom milling arrangements have already been made for the project, which is situated north of Kirkland Lake, Ont.
Meanwhile, at the New World project in Montana, the company is in the permitting process and hopes to have the environmental impact statement drafted by year-end.
