Hemlo study

Question on Hemlo. How best to deal with the human services, (housing, health, recreation, etc.) in the communities most affected by the Hemlo gold boom?

To help the companies, the communities themselves and the government in solving such problems, Ontario’s Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has released a 108-page study and recommendations on the subject.

Titled a Hemlo Human Services Update, the study looks at housing, social services, health, recreation, internal transportation and community education in five communities — Marathon, Manitouwadge, White River, Mobert and Pic Heron.

Dr Connie Neilson, who prepared the study at Lakehead University’s centre for regional development at Thunder Bay, cites housing for instance as one of mining personnel’s major concerns in the Hemlo area.
