Nickel giant Inco has a new value-added product: nickel foam. In the research phase for the past two years, nickel foam has been under development at Inco’s Copper Cliff refining nickel circuit in northeastern Ontario.
The company recently opened a plant at its Sudbury-area operations for the new product, which will be targeted towards the rechargeable consumer battery and automotive electric vehicle industries.
Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. contributed to the project with a $12-million repayable loan.
Inco says about 20 persons are involved in the project, which employs the company’s nickel carbonyl technology. The company says nickel foam produces no polluting effluents and could displace less efficient and more polluting technologies.
