Inco, Golden Knight renew Casa Berardi exploration

This month marks the start of a 15-month exploration program at Casa Berardi Est gold mine in Quebec of Inco Gold and Golden Knight Resources. The program is designed to define the mine’s resources in the area between the 300-metre level and the 600-metre level. Currently at the mine, which began production in 1988, mining is under way above the 200-metre level and stopes are being developed at the 250-metre level. A ramp is being driven to the 300-metre level to accommodate the next level of development, scheduled for 1991.

At the Casa Berardi Ouest mine, which began production earlier this year and which shares a mill with the Est mine, output is exceeding a projected 400-ton-per-day expectation by about 100 tons a day with the forecast average gold deposit grade of approximately 0.28 oz. per ton being maintained. Development below the 250- to 300-metre level is planned for next year.

Inco Gold’s vice-president of exploration, Dave Browne, told The Northern Miner the company and its partner are investigating an expansion of the production total from both mines from currently 1,320 tons to about 2,000 tons. The figures are based on an exploration program completed in April at Ouest mine that determined that the minable reserves there had increased from 2.3 million tons grading 0.24 oz. per ton to 3.8 million tons grading 0.21 oz.
