International mining conferences abound

A number of upcoming international conferences will focus on various prospective regions throughout the world.

The governments of Ireland and Nova Scotia will host the North Atlantic Minerals Symposium, to be held in Dublin from Sept. 19-22. The conference, aimed at examining the mineral potential of the North Atlantic, will feature a host of speakers representing companies in the region (Richmont Mines, Billiton, BHP Minerals and Falconbridge), governments (the geological surveys of Ireland, Canada and Newfoundland, and the natural resources department of Ireland), and financial and consulting firms (Barclays Capital Markets, the Vancouver and Irish stock exchanges and NM Rothschild & Sons).

The conference will also include a trade exhibition and field trips to Irish base metals, gold and industrial minerals deposits.

Infrastructure, regulations and risk management in Latin America will be discussed from June 2-3 in Keystone, Colo.

The conference, sponsored by the institute of the Americas, will examine the legal framework, tax practices, environmental practices, and social and political climates of the region’s major mining nations.

Sponsored by the Institute of the Americas, the conference will feature speakers from the World Bank, International Institute for Sustainable Development and Environmental Law Institute, as well as from companies working in the region and governments.

Mining in Peru will be up for discussion between Sept. 6 and 10 in Arequipa. Entitled “Mining: Challenge of the Third Millennium,” the conference will focus on such issues as technology, exploration, cost reduction, safety and the environment.

Speakers will include representatives of Canadian and other foreign firms operating in Peru (including Rio Algom, Asarco, Cominco) as well as local and national government representatives.

Numerous field trips are offered to such projects as the Cerro Verdo copper mine, the Pierina gold mine, the Yanacocha gold mine, the Tintaya cooper mine, as well as several plants and processing facilities.
