A $580-million land claim settlement with the federal government covering the eastern portion of the Northwest Territories was recently approved in a referendum by Inuit voters.
About 80% of those eligible voted in the referendum, with 69% in favor. The settlement will give the 18,000 Inuit inhabitants of the eastern Arctic direct control over 350,000 sq. km of land, including 36,000 sq. km of subsurface mineral rights.
Federal government plans call for the creation of a new territory to be known as Nunavut.
