Iron Ore Company of Canada workers at Labrador City, Nfld., members of USW Local 5795, have approved a new contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The union local is the bargaining unit for most of the company’s hourly employees at the iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing facility.
The last contract expired Feb 28 of this year. The approximately 1,300 members of the union local walked off the job March 23, forcing a shutdown of most of the company’s operations. During the strike, the company continued to ship from inventory at Sept-Isles, Que.
With the strike over, the company is able to resume production at its Carol project near Labrador City.
The Iron Ore Company of Canada is North America’s largest iron ore producer and employs about 2,500 people in Quebec and Newfoundland.
