It’s not too late to donate to The Townships Project

Women in Mining networks in Toronto and Vancouver have raised nearly US$70,000 for The Townships Project, with the largest corporate donations so far coming from South Africa-based Homeland Energy (HEG-T, HMDEF-0), Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM-T, AEM-n)and FNX Mining (FNX-T).

The nonprofit group set a goal of raising US$250,000 for The Townships Project, a micro-lending initiative in South Africa that offers repayable interest-bearing loans to South African entrepreneurs, most of whom are women.

Since it began in 1999, the project has improved the lives of more than 15,000 people, helping them make the jump from poverty to self-reliance. (For examples of small businesses that have succeeded because of the Townships Project visit: www.thetownshipsproject.org.)

Every donation in the fundraising campaign qualifies the donor for an entry into WIM’s Meet the Mining Mogul contest. The winner gets to spend one hour in a private meeting with philanthropist Frank Giustra, investment entrepreneur Eric Sprott and gold mining magnate Robert McEwen.

The winner of the contest, to be selected in a draw, will be announced on March 3 at the Prospectors and Developers Convention in Toronto. Yvonne Radinku, the woman who delivers microfinance in Cape Town with support from the Townships Project, will be on hand to congratulate the winner.

Women in Mining will be sharing booth 342 at PDAC with Golder Associates.

Sponsors of the fundraising campaign include: Homeland Energy, Agnico-Eagle, FNX Mining, Mountain Province Diamonds (MDM-x), law firm Heenan Blaikie, Robertson GeoConsultants and consultants Watts, Griffis & McOuat.
