JAG eyes Mint tailings

An agreement with a numbered Ontario company will give JAG Mines (ME) a half interest in a project to reprocess refinery tailings from the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa.

Mint waste discharged into Nepean Bay on the Ottawa River contains gold, silver and platinum-group metals.

The numbered company, which conducts business as Maple Leaf Processing, has been investigating the possibility of reprocessing the waste since late 1995. An estimated 30 tonnes of silver, gold and platinoids lie as sediment on the river bed. Recovery costs are estimated at $20 per tonne.
