Joubin editorial sparks interest

The editorial about Franc Joubin in your May 29-June 4 issue was of particular interest to me because I was just reviewing the proofs for my latest literary effort, A Place For Gold, which is soon to be published. In this history of mining on Vancouver Island, I make several references to Joubin and include quotations from his book, Not For Gold Alone.

My book also includes a copy of the Tofino Hotel guest registry of December 1938, in which Joubin’s signature appears twice, along with the signatures of several others who were involved in the west coast gold mining boom during that period. At the time, he was employed by Pioneer Gold Mines of British Columbia and had developed the Musketeer mine at Bedwell River, near Tofino, to modest production. He lived in Tofino with his wife and had his office there from the fall of 1938 until the mine was closed, by wartime conditions, in December 1942.
