Juniors eye African copper-cobalt

Zaire ‘s copper and cobalt potential will be explored by two Canadian juniors in partnership with La Generale des Carrieres et des Mines (GECAMINES).

As part of a preliminary agreement with Trillion Resources (TLQ-T), Melkior Resources (MKR-M) will spend $1.5 million exploring an area comprising 2.8 million sq. km in the east-central portion of the Shaba copper arc.

The area is adjacent to the Tenke Fungurume deposits, which Consolidated Eurocan Ventures (KEU-V) plans to develop under the terms of a joint venture with GECAMINES (T.N.M., July 29/96).

Melkior says the agreement is for defined copper and cobalt deposits in its first stages, but the parties will be allowed flexibility in subsequent activities.

The agreement is subject to regulatory and government approval, as well as the completion of a final agreement.

David Chaplin, Trillion’s project coordinator, says it is premature to discuss details of the mineral potential of the land package. “But there is a resource there that has been known for a long period of time. “
