Ontario is modernizing its Mining Act to meet business needs, mines minister George Pirie said at a recent London conference.

This year, Iamgold (TSX: IMG; NYSE: IAG) began the $3 billion Côté mine. Then, Equinox Gold (TSX: EQX; NYSE: EQX) started its 400,000-oz.-a-year Greenstone gold mine. Meanwhile, Queens Park counted $44 billion promised by car makers like Toyota and Stellantis (NYSE: STLA) for new battery plants and assembly lines. The events coincided with efforts to speed up permitting. They aimed to feed northern minerals to southern factories.

“Modernizing the Mining Act isn’t just about cutting red tape—it’s about ensuring Ontario remains the fastest and most competitive jurisdiction for miners while respecting the interests of communities and First Nations,” Pirie told attendees at The Northern Miner’s International Metals Symposium on Dec. 1.

Equinox Gold chair Ross Beaty and Iamgold CEO Renaud Adams shared insights on Ontario. It has rich resources, strong partnerships and a growing appeal for miners.

The panel tackled issues like labour shortages, rising wages and the need for tech to drive sustainability. High gold prices and Ontario’s strategy to enhance global competitiveness in critical minerals framed this.
