The KEGS Foundation, now in its sixth year of supporting Canadian undergraduates and graduates in geophysics, has awarded 13 scholarships totalling nearly $10,000 to students at eight Canadian universities for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The total is double that of last year and includes the endowment scholarship established in 2001 in honour of renowned Canadian geophysicist Heikki Limion (1942-2000).
The scholarships were presented to nine undergraduate and four graduate students, and range from $500 to $1,000, depending on merit and need.
The undergrads include: Andrew Benson of McMaster University; Daniel Brake of Memorial University; Alexandra Campbell of Queen’s University; Daniel Card, Becky Cook and Ashley Krakowka of the University of Manitoba; Michael Hartley of the University of Saskatchewan; and Julie Patrick and Andrew Schaeffer of the University of British Columbia (UBC). The four graduate students are: Catherine Dubreuil-Boisclair of …cole Polytechnique in Montreal; Carla Kennedy and Julie Smith of Memorial University; and Sergey Samsonov of the University of Western Ontario.
Schaeffer, a fourth-year student at UBC, was selected as the fifth recipient of the Limion scholarship for his high academic standing. Sergey Samsonov, a PhD candidate at Western, received the first KEGS Pioneers scholarship in recognition of the breadth of his scientific accomplishments, and a PhD research project directed at harnessing differential satellite radar imaging for short-term elevation changes. The Pioneers scholarship is supported by donations made in honour of geophysicists Phil Hallof, Harry Seigel, George Sander, Tom Gledhill, and Mike Reford.
These awards are complemented by 14 scholarships awarded to Canadian students by the U.S.-based Society of Exploration Geophysicists Foundation. These awards include a US$1,000 scholarship established in 1997 by KEGS, since renamed the Phillip Hallof scholarship in recognition of Hallof’s many contributions to exploration geophysics. The Hallof scholarship was awarded to Grace Ma at UBC.
The KEGS Foundation relies on donations to support undergraduate geophysicists in Canada.
